Finding an Apartment for Those Living in Poverty
If you are getting government assistance, then you might know about the low income apartments for rent program through the government. This program was created for the purpose of helping people get a good place to live within a price that they could afford. So many people just don’t make enough to afford decent housing. Usually they end up living in very bad neighborhoods where the rent is the cheapest. If it were a family living in these bad neighborhoods, the kids might be heavily influenced by crime. The government believes that by helping pay part of the rent for these people, they might be able to live in a better area with less crime.
What the government does is it gives a voucher to you and you can apply it to where ever they are accepted. I was able to get a voucher and it really helped me out immensely. I used to live in a bad part of town where break-ins happen quite often. Now with the voucher, I am living in a safer area of town. I had to apply through HUD and I only needed to show proof of my income, which had to be below 135% of the poverty line. But they also accepted proof that you are getting government assistance from other programs.
This is really a great program. I’ve been trying to get other family members to sign up for this program so they can move out of their old places as well. You can look for housing from just about anywhere. What I did was search on craigslist. It was free to use so why not. I then contacted the landlords of a few apartment complexes and asked if they accepted the vouchers. If they do, I’d go check out the complex and see whether it was up to par. I’d say most of the apartments I saw were kept up well. Usually, they would post pictures online so you can get a quick look before you head out there. That really saved a lot of time for me.
